Sydney clubs 1960

White Water Wanderers was a Bondi spearfishing club. Sydney Sea Hunters a City of Sydney club.

Aluminum boats with outboards to 45 HP were the first of the “fast” dive boats. A team of four was ideal. Vic Ley is pictured heading north from Long Reef. Vic launched his dive boat at Rose Bay in Sydney Harbour and then took the trip north. Len McLeod (in top centre) speared this Blue Groper (today a protected species) inside North Head – the entrance to Sydney Harbour. In those days heavily polluted by a sewerage outlet nearby. The adult Rock Lobster was caught by Len during the October New South Wales state spearfishing championships at Currarong (1961).
